International Coach Federation Releases 2016 Global Coaching Study

Extensive industry research project demonstrates the size and scope of a growing profession.
Lexington, Kentucky, USA—The International Coach Federation (ICF) has announced the release of its newest piece of industry research, the 2016 ICF Global Coaching Study. The full report is now available for purchase at Coachfederation.org/2016study.
The third such study commissioned by ICF, the 2016 Global Coaching Study provides an up-to-date picture of the coaching profession worldwide.
“ICF’s mission as the world’s largest coaching association is to lead the global advancement of the coaching profession. To fulfill this, we are pursuing the strategic goal of assuming a thought-leadership role for the evolution of global coaching,” said 2016 ICF Global Board Chair Leda Turai Petrauskiene, MCC. “As our most extensive survey of the coaching profession to date, the 2016 Global Coaching Study is a cornerstone of this effort.”
The study was undertaken by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP’s Research to Insight division, with a six-month survey period that began in July 2015. Available in nine languages, the survey was completed by 15,380 respondents from 137 countries.
The study shows that there are currently approximately 53,300 coach practitioners worldwide. Among coaches with active clients (90 percent of respondents), average annual revenue from coaching equals $51,000 USD.
By combining the average annual income generated by coach practitioners with the number of coaches with active clients, the estimated 2015 global revenue from coaching was $2.356 billion USD, representing a 19 percent increase over the 2011 estimate published in the 2012 Global Coaching Study.
For the first time, the 2016 study includes data specific to individuals who self-identify as managers and leaders who use coaching skills within their organizations.
“As ICF moves toward our goal of coaching being an integral part of society, it is essential for us to learn more about how and why managers and leaders use coaching skills. The additions to this study provide valuable insights into a growing population on the coaching continuum,” Petrauskiene said.
The 2016 ICF Global Coaching Study complements ICF’s portfolio of industry research, including the 2010 and 2014 iterations of the ICF Global Consumer Awareness Study and the Association’s ongoing research into organizational coaching cultures in collaboration with the Human Capital Institute.
