Coaching Session Transcripts
All applicants must submit transcripts for each recorded coaching session submitted when completing the online credential application. Transcripts must be a verbatim, written word-for-word record of the coaching session(s) submitted.
As part of ICF’s work to enhance systems for the review and scoring of recorded coaching sessions, we asked experienced ICF Assessors about the methods they use when conducting assessments. Further, we examined similar types of evaluations that were conducted by other credentialing bodies and by researchers working with the analysis of conversations. We found that the use of transcripts as a supplement to audio recordings is a broadly accepted practice and is recognized as one way to improve the consistency of scoring and quality of feedback.
As ICF developed new training for ICF Assessors, we experimented with providing verbatim transcripts as a supplement to recorded sessions. We found that the transcript led to more reliable scoring and more detailed feedback.
ICF recognizes that the transcript of a recorded coaching session does not take the place of listening to the actual recorded session, and this is reiterated in the training of Assessors. However, we believe requiring transcripts for all recordings will enhance the assessment process, yielding more reliable results and higher-quality feedback for applicants.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What is a transcript?
A: The transcription process involves converting the conversation captured in voice-recorded coaching sessions (audio files) into word-for-word text format. Your coaching session transcript should include the full word-for-word conversation that took place between you and your client during your coaching session. A reader of the transcript would be able to see who was speaking, the coach or the client, at any given time in the conversation.
Q: Can I use an app or software to create my transcripts?
A: Yes, as long as the provided transcript is verbatim, word-for-word text. Please also ensure that it is clear who is speaking, either the coach or client, on the transcript at any given time in the conversation. View sample transcript PDF.
