Coach Training

Coaches are trained to listen, observe, and customize their approach to individual client needs.  They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful.  The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity the client already has.

If you are new to the coaching profession, the International Coach Federation recommends the following three step process before you begin your coaching practice:

1. Hire a Coach

To truly gain full knowledge and understanding of the coach-client relationship, begin your journey as a client.  This step will provide valuable insight into the coaching relationship and prepare you for a meaningful relationship with your clients.  Additionally, consulting a coach can help you to determine whether coaching is the right profession for you.

To locate a coach, visit ICF's Coach Referral Service (CRS) or search for an ICF member.

2. Attend a Coach Training Program

ICF strongly recommends that you complete an ICF accredited coach training program before beginning your practice.  Formal training will prepare you for the rewards and challenges of the coaching profession.  ICF accredited programs submit to review and continuing oversight to demonstrate their commitment to the highest standards for curricula, the ICF defined core competencies, faculty, structure, proficiency, and ethics to support excellence in the training of coaches.  For a list of ICF accredited programs, please visit For Prospective Students.

3. Join the International Coach Federation
